Palabos intensive training
Get crucial practical knowledge directly from the developers of Palabos!
Our intensive 3-day courses focus on the usage of our open-source Palabos software. An optional crash course on the basics of the lattice Boltzmann method, underlying the Palabos software, is provided on the first training day. The next two days focus on practical aspects of using Palabos. Examples of industrial interest are thoroughly studied, and participants are familiarized with the full procedure of setting up a Palabos simulation from scratch.
Covered topics
- Complete workflows of a Palabos simulation: problem setup, pre-processing, post-processing.
- Advanced take-home examples that can be adapted to your personal work.
- Creation of CAD models using Trimble® SketchUp and their usage with Palabos.
- Post-processing and data analysis with Palabos and with the open-source Paraview software.
- Visualization techniques and creation of movies with simulation results.
- Usage of the Python scripting interface, and advanced development in C++.
- Various applications in complex physics for which Palabos is particularly efficient, including biomedical applications, turbulent flows, particle integration, free-surface and multi-phase flows.
- Technical aspects of the software: massive parallelism, parallel grid generation in complex geometries.
Details
- The course is suitable for anyone with an engineering, physics or science background. Previous experience with the lattice Boltzmann method or with Palabos is not required. Knowledge of C++ or Python in a Unix-like programming environment and familiarity with the basics of fluid dynamics are recommended.
- Participants should bring their own laptops. A USB memory stick containing a virtual hard disk with a pre-installed Palabos/Linux system will be provided to every participant. To avoid delays, the laptops are recommended to have VirtualBox already installed.
- Printed course materials will be offered.
- The hours for all classes are 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. The courses will be given in English. Lunch and refreshments will be offered during the morning and afternoon breaks.
